DPS sex offender database keeping the public informed

Oct 21, 2015, 6:00 AM

PHOENIX —  The Arizona Department of Public Safety wants the public to be aware of sex offenders living in their area.

This year DPS launched the offender watch database.

“All of the law enforcement agencies in the state send their (sex offender) information to us, and we enter it into the system,” said Stephen Morrison, DPS manager of criminal history records.

Arizona has 15,438 registered sex offenders. Of those offenders 5,217 are level two and level three offenders. The DPS website is kept up-to-date with the most current level two and three offenders.

“They can search by name, city, zip code or a specific address,” Morrison said. “We want to make sure that they can find the offender that they are looking for.”

Residents can also stay up to date on the latest sex offender information in their area through an email service provided by DPS.

“Whenever a sex offender registers in the area that you have that’s five miles or 10 miles, then you will be notified,” he said.

Morrison reminds Arizona residents that the website should be used for safety and information purposes only and should never be used as a means to harass or retaliate against another neighbor.

We want to hear from you.
