Boom! Thunderstorms shake up morning drive in Phoenix

PHOENIX — Rain and thunder pounded metro Phoenix on Monday morning, flooding streets and knocking out power to homes and businesses in the western suburbs.
Early-morning risers saw lightning, heard rumbling and drove through a lot of water during the opening of commuter rush hour.

An inch of rain fell in a half-hour near 83rd Avenue and Camelback Road. In central Phoenix, bucketsful of rain dropped on drivers along State Route 51.
At least 1,800 APS customers lost power in the Buckeye, Arizona, area and several Glendale businesses and homes also were without electricity.
Temperatures were in the mid 80s.

By 6:30 a.m. the East Valley was getting the storm.
Sky Harbor Airport reported no delays.
