Infant dies from the flu in Maricopa County

PHOENIX — An infant in Maricopa County has died from the flu, marking the first pediatric flu death of the season, the county’s Department of Public Health said Tuesday.

The baby was too young to receive a flu shot, according to a press release.

“This incredibly sad case reminds us that even though the flu is common, it can cause serious illness and even death,” Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, the department’s medical director for disease control, said in the release.

“This is a tragic reminder that anyone who is able to get the flu shot should, not only to protect themselves, but to protect those around them who are most at risk of severe disease and death from the flu.”

No children in the county died from the flu last year, but three died in 2017.

So far this season, a total of 935 flu cases have been reported to the county, about four times what they were at this time last season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older get the flu vaccine.
