PHOENIX — If the newest Marvel movie wasn’t enough to get your superhero juices flowing, another event might do the trick.

On Saturday, participating comic book stores around the Valley planned to take part in Free Comic Book Day, offering free comic books to anyone who walks in.

Mesa’s Gotham City Comics & Coffee and Glendale’s Drawn to Comics both went all-in on the event.

In downtown Mesa, comic book enthusiasts can enjoy a number of things, including a scavenger hunt and a costume contest.

Gotham City Comics & Coffee even made a map of the more than 15 businesses around Mesa participating in the event.

The fun starts at 46 W. Main Street and continues throughout downtown.

The event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Glendale, Drawn to Comics is holding a festival in honor of the day.

Over 20 comic book creators will be present for the “Comic Book Christmas” at the Velma Teague Library just north of the comic shop at 7010 N. 58th Ave. and Glendale Ave. from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

There will also be a number of booths featuring the Arizona Autobots, the 501st Dune Sea Garrison and the Phoenix Ghostbusters.

For the second straight year, musical acts Dratini on the Rocks, Driftwood Quintet and Mini Bosses will also be performing at the main store.

Free Comic Book Day has been around since 2002 and is held every year on the first Saturday in May.

We want to hear from you.
