PHOENIX – It wasn’t that long ago that these two criminals were probably watching Sesame Street learning C is for cookie. Now, apparently, C is for cigarettes and B is for baseball bat.

Phoenix police sergeant Darren Burch said the crime occurred on February 16, 2011, at about 5:30 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon.

“Two juveniles walked into the food market at 67th Avenue and McDowell Road,” Burch said.

“The clerk is a 60-year-old female and she was watching them as they come in and they look somewhat suspicious as they went to the back of the store, the two juveniles, kind of just looked like they were talking a lot, looking around a lot, so she kind of kept an eye on them.”

The clerk says one of the boys was about 15 years old, the other only 12 years old.

“One of the kids actually had concealed a baseball bat in his right sleeve,” Burch said. “He approaches the clerk (and) demands cigarettes.”

It was the older kid. He actually jumped up on the counter holding the baseball bat over his head as a weapon. After grabbing two packs of smokes, he and his buddy took off.

“This is so concerning because at that age, to do this type of crime, which is an armed robbery – you’re using a weapon, a baseball bat – and to do that type of crime as a juvenile, what are they going to do when they get older?”

Both of these suspects are little guys – one’s about 4-feet-11-inches tall, the other around 5-feet-3-inches tall.
