Micro-housing may soon be coming to Phoenix if one developer has his way.

Michael Lafferty of Lafferty Development is hoping to bring 190 to 230 micro units to 12th and Van Buren Streets, according to the Phoenix Business Journal. Lafferty wants to spark redevelopment along Van Buren and also recreate a popular idea in urban settings like Manhattan and Hong Kong. His idea is named the St. Ambrose project and will cost $25 million.

In New York City, leasing is set to begin for Carmel Place, the city’s first micro-unit development. It features 55 studio apartments ranging from 260 to 360 square feet. It’s a way to solve the problem of those looking to live alone and not have to pile on the roommates in an expensive city.

This type of housing could work in Phoenix. The St. Ambrose project did gain approvals from the city of Phoenix, and Lafferty may start construction before the end of the year or in early 2016.

Transwestern Commercial Real Estate is also proposing a tower of apartments with micro units near McKinley and Second Streets.

We want to hear from you.
