Luke Air Force Base plans night training flights through May

PHOENIX — Some West Valley neighborhoods may be hearing the sound of thunder at night all monthlong, but it will actually be the sound of fighter jets.
Luke Air Force Base, near Glendale, will be conducting night flight operations with F-16
and F-35 jets.
Night training sessions are necessary for student pilots’ combat preparations.
A post to the base’s Facebook page read that the majority of the weeknight flights would end around 11:30 p.m.
No flying was scheduled on weekends or the long Memorial Day weekend.
A base statement said it reserved the right to fly around the clock as needed but that
it tried to minimize late-night flights that might disturb areas around the base.
