PHOENIX – The Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway is nearly two-thirds complete after the second year of construction on the ambitious project, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The 22-mile stretch of highway, which is scheduled to open in late 2019, will provide a new connection for motorists traveling between the East Valley and West Valley that bypasses downtown Phoenix.

ADOT said crews installed 20 miles of drainage pipe, put down 107,000 tons of asphalt, moved 9.9 million cubic yards of dirt and used 10,800 tons of recycled steel rebar in 2018.

Work on the final link of the Valley’s Loop 202 and 101 system started in early 2017.

The South Mountain Freeway will pick up where the Loop 202 currently ends at Interstate 10 in Chandler and reconnect with I-10 at 59th Avenue in west Phoenix.

ADOT estimates that as many as 190,000 vehicles will use the route daily by 2035.

Progress updates as well as information about road closures due to construction can be found on ADOT’s website.
