PHOENIX — Goodguys Rod and Custom Association kicked off its ninth Spring Nationals car show on Friday at WestWorld.

For the first time, spectators will be able to see hot rods at the show built as recently as 1987. The cutoff year was extended from 1972 in September.

The site’s promo video advertised the event as a place “where giant traditions meet new-school trends.”

More than 2,500 cars and trucks will be on display this weekend.

The show will also include exhibitions and arts and crafts. Friday took off with a fast opening: hot rods, trick trucks and muscle cars competed on a timed course.

If you missed out on that, don’t worry: cars will be back on the timed course again on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon and then 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Goodguys also offers model building for children and a burnout competition.

Sunday will include a grand prize giveaway and the highlight of the annual event, the awards show for more than 75 recipients, which is scheduled to begin at 2:22 p.m. Awards include Muscle Car of the Year, Custom Rod of the Year and Chevy and Ford Truck Picks.

Tickets cost $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Kids up to age 6 are free and ages 7-12 cost $6.

The car show is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

We want to hear from you.
