PHOENIX — The worlds of sports and politics came together over the weekend when Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald paid a visit to U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

McCain tweeted a picture of himself, Fitzgerald and his wife, Cindy, Saturday morning in Sedona.

The senator has been recovering on the northern Arizona property while getting treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer.

In a Christmas piece for Sports Illustrated, Fitzgerald said he had become close with the 81-year-old over the past five years and that the senator had given him a private tour of the U.S. Senate.

“To see where so much history has happened blew me away,” Fitzgerald wrote. “As I said, I’m not a super-political person, but I have young sons and I want them to know our nation’s history.”

The 2016 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award winner has also been a guest panelist at McCain’s annual global summit in Sedona that focuses on a slew of issues ranging from global warming and technology to sex trafficking.

Fitzgerald’s visit came a week after McCain’s daughter, Meghan, visited her father. She posted the first public photo of him since he left the nation’s capital over the holidays.

The senator was diagnosed with glioblastoma in July. He has not returned to Washington, D.C. since the holiday recess but has continued to pen bills.

Doctors found a second tumor in his brain back in November. The discovery came just weeks after he tore his Achilles tendon.

We want to hear from you.
