Despite cuts, Mesa schools prepared for school year

Jul 16, 2012, 5:03 PM | Updated: 5:04 pm

It’s $1.5 million lighter this year, but the budget for the Mesa School District still covers the basics.

School District Director Helen Hollands called this year’s budget bare bones, but said the kids are always a top priority.

“Our goal is that [the students] won’t notice anything,” she said.

However, the budget does not leave a lot of room for any unexpected building repairs or maintenance. Hollands said the district is prepared to act quickly, should a complication arrive.

“We always have a plan in place because we will always make sure that those students have a safe learning environment to go to,” she said.

Mesa’s main plan is simply moving students to another building.

In November, district residents will be asked to approve a proposed $230 million bond that would provide money for building repairs and classroom technology.
