Glendale Summer Band series set to return this week, runs through end of June

PHOENIX — The Glendale Summer Band series makes its return this week and offers free concerts through the end of June.

The Summer Band, the longest-running community band in Arizona, begins its 56th year on Thursday at 8 p.m. and continues each week at the Murphy Park Amphitheatre at 58th and Glenn drives.

The band, comprised of around 100 volunteer musicians of different ages from all parts of the Valley, has not been able to hold in-person concerts since summer 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am thrilled to finally be back and see the other band members,” Nicole Krug, a member of the band and the communications manager for Mayor Jerry Weiers, said in a press release.

“We get energy from being together and performing music for those who come out to enjoy our concerts, so not being able to have that interaction was a lonely feeling.”

Each week has a different theme, starting with “Together Again” on Thursday followed by “A Tribute to Henry Fillmore,” “Henry Mancini meets Leroy Anderson” and “Broadway, Big Bang and Beatles!” before concluding with “Celebrate America!” on June 30.

“We know our band members are thrilled to come back together and play,” Heidi Barriga, Glendale special events administrator, said in the release.

“Our entire community looks forward to spending their summer nights outside while enjoying some great tunes.”

People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Light snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase.

The band started in 1966 and was the inspiration for the construction of the amphitheater, the city said, previously playing at O’Neil Park before moving to its current home.
