PHOENIX — Maricopa County said it would offer discount adoptions on dogs this week as its shelters were once again becoming overcrowded.

“We realized that we had about 576 at the shelter, which is tremendously high for us,” Maricopa County Animal Care and Control spokesman Jose Santiago said.

Dogs weighing 25 pounds or more can be adopted through Sunday for $17. Adoption fees can typically be as high as $150.

Santiago also said the shelter was being forced to house the animals in tighter-than-normal quarters.

“Unfortunately, because of the amount of dogs that we are getting on a daily basis as strays, lost and owner surrenders, we are now starting to double up (cage occupancy),” he said.

The adoptions are being offered at both county shelters — one is in Phoenix near 27th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road and the other is in Mesa near Rio Salado Parkway and the Loop 101.

The $17 fee will include vaccinations, a flea-and-tick treatment, licensing and a spay or neuter.

list of adoptable pets was available online.

The county offered discounted adoptions nearly all summer because of overcrowding. It took in nearly 400 animals over the Fourth of July holiday weekend alone.
