PHOENIX – If you think Arizona has the worst drivers in the country, you aren’t far off, according to a new study.
The Grand Canyon State ranked among the top 10 for worst drivers in a report released this month by personal finance website SmartAsset.
The rankings of each state were based on four metrics: percentage of drivers with insurance, number of DUIs per driver, number of fatalities per mile driven and Google searches related to driving tickets by residents. Each category was equally weighted.
Arizona, which was tied with Alaska at No. 9, didn’t stand out in any single category, but was ranked among the top half in each one. Its worst score came in the fatality rate metric.
In 2017, the first time SmartAsset reported results that included all 50 states, Arizona was No. 12. The 2016 rankings listed only the 25 worst states, which didn’t include Arizona.
Arizonans can take solace that their fellow border states were even worse, with California tied for third while New Mexico and Texas tied for fifth.
After two years in the runner-up spot, Mississippi took over the top position in the rankings.
In a good sign for the Sunshine State, Florida dropped to No. 8 after leading the pack in 2016 and 2017.
