PHOENIX — A preteen suburban Phoenix boy has dessert on the brain as he competes for the title of best kid baker.
Cody Vasquez of Gilbert is among the eight youngsters trying to take the cake on the Food Network’s “Kid Baking Championship.”
The winner will get $10,000, along with other prizes.
The first episode aired Monday night. Hosted by Duff Goldman and Valerie Bertinelli, the kids had to come up with a pair of goodies for a bake sale.
Cody made two pies and a poundcake in two hours. His crust rocks! @saratwobeds, you taking notes? Kids #BakingChampionship

Vasquez, 12, is no stranger to the spotlight. Last year he went to the White House for a dinner hosted by first lady Michelle Obama.
He earned that trip with a recipe for the first lady’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge.
The next episode of the baking challenge is Feb. 9.
