PHOENIX — This past Saturday, Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema, D-AZ, became the first sitting member of Congress to not only compete in, but complete the Ironman World Championship, according to a recent press release.

With a personal record of 15 hours and 2 minutes, Sinema finished the Ironman in Kona, Hawaii. The race consisted of a 2.4-mile ocean swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a full 26.2-mile marathon.

In conjunction to the race, Sinema also raised $35,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Sinema said it was an honor to complete the triathlon for the servicemen and women of the country.

“It was an absolute honor to race Ironman Kona for our wounded warriors,” she said after the race, according to the press release.  “Our servicemembers have given so much for our country, and some come home from battle with lasting wounds. Racing Kona for these brave men and women is a small token of my deep appreciation for their sacrifice.”

In addition to the fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project, Sinema also raised $25,000 for Women for Tri and more than $21,000 for the Ironman Foundation, according to the press release.

This isn’t Sinema’s first go-around with the triathlon: In 2013, she completed Ironman Arizona, becoming the first sitting member of Congress to complete an Ironman race in the district they represent.
