PHOENIX — Racism or patriotism.

Two words that have been thrown around immensely in political circles recently, especially after a tweet from President Donald Trump implored Democratic congresswomen of color to go back to their native countries.

Former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer provided her thoughts on the current state of American government during an interview with Mac & Gaydos on KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday.

“Every time you talk to somebody on the opposite side, what do you get? You’re a racist, you are a racist, you are a racist,” Brewer said. “They don’t want to talk about resolving the problem or addressing the issue. You are a racist. That is all they talk about.

“I think our country is so divided, I don’t know if and when we are ever going to be able to sit down and talk to people to find a solution to the issues that our country is facing.”

Brewer’s remarks come following last Sunday, when Trump told four congresswomen they should go back to the “broken and crime-infested” countries they came from, although all four are U.S. citizens and three were born in the country.

Trump’s words led to a Wednesday vote from the House on whether to condemn his statements as racist and impeach the president. The resolution failed by a 137-95 vote.

For Brewer, the word “racist” is used too frequently in today’s society and keep political parties on their own sides with no means of a compromise in sight.

“I get so tired. No matter what we say or how we say it, you’re a racist. You’re an absolute racist. We’re over the top,” Brewer said. “Our division in our country has to be resolved, it absolutely has to be resolved.”
