PHOENIX — A CBS News poll of likely voters showed Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema leading her Republican rivals in head-to-head match-ups in their Senate race in Arizona.

Sinema topped former state Sen. Kelli Ward, 43 percent to 35 percent; Rep. Martha McSally 41 percent to 34 percent and former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, 45 percent to 28 percent.

“It’s the kind of crazy political season we expected it to be,” conservative political consultant Stan Barnes said Monday on KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News.

The 1,001 respondents in Arizona were asked whom they’d vote for in the fall general election in U.S. Senate race for retiring Jeff Flake’s seat.

The poll was released Sunday.

“In a world where polarization is the name of the game … it’s very difficult to be a conservative Republican in a primary and the get out and be someone who appeals to a broader middle.”

Barnes said the same perspective can be applied to Sinema.

“Kyrsten Sinema has got her own issues with her own base,” he said. “She’s got to go to the middle and find the majority.”

The poll’s margin of error was plus or minus 3.7 percent.

An OH Predictive Insights poll conducted in November 2017 and an NBC poll that was released Tuesday found similar results favoring Sinema.

In a new Data Orbital survey focused on the GOP candidates, 38 percent said they would vote for McSally if the party primary were held today (the telephone poll was taken June 19-21).

Ward finished second at 22.7 percent, while Arpaio had 16.6 percent. Undecideds totaled 20.5 percent.

By age, McSally garnered 44.8 percent of the voters 65 and older and 37 percent among 55-to-64 year-olds but only 21 percent of those 18 to 34.

Arpaio scored highest with the youngest voters with 26.5 percent.

Ward’s best numbers came from 45-to-54 year-olds at 31.3 percent.
