PHOENIX – Business was booming for Sky Harbor International Airport in the month of March, as a new single-month record was set with nearly 4.4 million passengers.
The combination of spring training, spring break holiday, NASCAR and other Phoenix area events in March contributed to the spike in the number of passengers compared to past years.
According to a release by the City of Phoenix’s Aviation Department, Sky Harbor served more than 140,000 passengers per day in March, a 2.3 percent increase from 2017 and 1.9 percent increase from 2016 — when the previous record was set.
American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, Sky Harbor’s largest carriers, reported increases in the number of passengers served in the first quarter of 2018 compared to 2017.
Nearly two million travelers used American as their service provider, while Southwest served more than 1.4 million passengers.
Sky Harbor has been in the process of adding additional domestic and international flights in recent months.
Air Canada announced in February it would add nonstop service to Montreal, as well as increase its frequency of flights from Calgary and Vancouver to Phoenix from four days a week to seven.
British Airways added daily flights on Tuesdays and Fridays, with another flight on Sunday being launched in May.
In addition, Condor Airlines will begin nonstop seasonal service to Frankfurt, Germany in May.
Sky Harbor has taken an initiative in providing a better travel experience for the millions who arrive and depart every year.
Nearly $2 billion has been allocated to improve many of the airports facilities and transportation.
A 2.5-mile expansion to the PHX Sky Train will extend its route to the Rental Car Center located near 16th Street and Buckeye Road.
There are also improvements being made to Terminal 3, which will soon be named John S. McCain III Terminal, adding numerous restaurants and shops that are all set to be open by 2020.
A new concourse is under construction for Terminal 4, which will add eight new gates to the airport’s busiest terminal.
