PHOENIX — Mesa firefighters took it upon themselves this week to hang Christmas lights for a family after a man fell off a ladder and was injured.

“He had just started it and obviously had some little kids there that were very excited for the holidays and some of the crew members on my crew recognized that,” Mesa Fire and Medical Department Capt. Ken Hall said.

“They took it upon themselves to take a ladder off the fire truck and go ahead and finish his job there. Hopefully that will help the family have a good holiday season.”

Hall said the man hit his face on the ladder when he fell and landed on his hip.

“It sounds like what happened is this gentlemen was using a ladder — a combination ladder, one of the ones you can do in an extension form, you can set them up as an A-frame ladder — and he had climbed to the very top rung and he was putting up lights and he fell from the top,” Hall said.

When Hall’s crew arrived, they found the man bleeding and surrounded by his family. He was taken to the hospital and Hall planned to check in on him later this week.

Hall said the good deed should serve as a reminder to others to be careful on ladders when hanging holiday decor.

“We have a lot of people getting on ladders that maybe only get on a ladder once a year — they’re not comfortable with it,” he said.

Hall said people should read safety recommendations before climbing a ladder and should consider having someone hold it in place.
