PHOENIX — Christmas came early for hundreds of elementary school students in Phoenix.
Every student at Capitol Elementary School near 16th Avenue and Van Buren Street now has a new set of wheels. Cox Communications donated 670 bicycles to the kids on Friday.
The bikes filled the school’s gymnasium.
Students also each received a helmet and a lock set for their bikes.
One by one students had the chance to pick a bike. Principal Russell Sanders said for a lot of the children it could be their only Christmas gift this year.
“The poverty is very intense at our school and this day means Christmas to our students,” Sanders said.
“This is the big gift that they are going to receive.”
The donation marked the 20th partnership between the cable company and the school.
“This has been a tradition at our school for these past 20 years and it is something that is looked forward to by students, parents and the community at large throughout the year,” Sanders said.
