PHOENIX — Police in Mesa said they shot and wounded a man who pointed a gun at them during a high-risk traffic stop Monday night.

The Mesa Police Department said the shooting near Alma School Road and Main Street around 8 p.m. followed a domestic disturbance call officers were responding to nearby.

Police said they received a call from a woman who reported she had been assaulted by her boyfriend and that he had a gun.

When officers arrived at the home near the Country Club Drive and Broadway Road, the suspect drove by. A patrol unit tailed him for several blocks before police performed the traffic stop.

The suspect leaned out of his vehicle “holding what appeared to be a handgun,” according to a Mesa Police press release.

An officer fired, wounding the man, before police used less lethal measures to get him out of the car.

The 43-year-old suspect, whose name wasn’t released, was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

He will be booked into jail after his discharge on counts of domestic violence and aggravated assault on law enforcement, police said.

Detectives determined that the suspect pointed a loaded handgun at officers and tossed it in the roadway.

Police said they executed a search warrant on the suspect’s vehicle Tuesday afternoon and found three more handguns.
