PHOENIX — A Mexican citizen was arrested last week after he allegedly assaulted border patrol agents in Arizona, authorities said.

Border patrol agents on May 31 found Miguel Angel Acatzihua-Temoxtle, 25, and several individuals near Newfield, Arizona, after receiving information that groups of undocumented non-citizens were passing through the Baboquivari Mountain range, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said in a press release on Monday.

Acatzihua-Temoxtle allegedly fled up the side of a wash and kicked several large boulders toward the border patrol agents in an attempt to slow them down, authorities said.

After Acatzihua-Temoxtle was caught, he allegedly physically assaulted two of the agents and attempted to strangle one of them with their own lanyard.

He had an initial appearance before a United States judge on Thursday for two counts of assault on a federal officer with the use of a deadly or dangerous weapon.

A conviction for assault on a federal officer with the use of a deadly or dangerous weapon carries a maximum penalty of 20 years behind bars and up to a $250,000 fine, authorities said.

Investigation of the case was conducted by Border Patrol.
