PHOENIX — Two children are dead and their hospitalized mother is the primary suspect, Phoenix police said early Thursday.

Officers responded to a call from an apartment near 13th Street and Mountain View Road just before 6 p.m. Wednesday after a man called 911 saying his children were dead, Sgt. Andy Williams with the Phoenix Police Department said.

The children, ages 9 and 4, were found in a bed and pronounced dead but had no obvious signs of trauma, police said. The woman was taken to the hospital suffering from several wounds, including lacerations, but was in stable condition, Williams told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

“Our homicide investigators have worked through the night,” Williams said. “The information they provided was the dad’s not a suspect, he’s been released.”

Williams added police don’t believe anyone else was in the home with the family at the time of the incident.

“There’s nothing to suggest … this was a random attack,” he said.

Detectives were still processing the scene early Thursday, Williams added.

The Maricopa County medical examiner will determine the cause of the girls’ deaths.
