PHOENIX – U.S. News and World Report ranked Phoenix Children’s as the best pediatric hospital in Arizona and the second-best in the Southwest for 2021-22.

For the fifth time in the 15 years of the website’s annual rankings, which were updated Tuesday, Phoenix Children’s made it into the top 50 nationally for each of the 10 specialties.

Nationwide, 89 facilities were ranked in at least one specialty, with Phoenix Children’s the only Arizona representative.

“Achieving top rankings in all 10 specialties reflects the strength of our reputation for clinical excellence among physicians nationwide and as a pediatric health system offering world-class care,” Dr. Michael Ritchey, Phoenix Children’s senior vice president and chief medical officer, said in a press release.

“This recognition validates our hard work over the past year, but we are not content to rest on our laurels and will continue to push for the best clinical outcomes for our patient families.”

Here’s where Phoenix Children’s ranked in each U.S. News and World Report category:

  • Neonatology — No. 20
  • Cardiology and heart surgery — No. 28 (represented by Phoenix Children’s Heart Center)
  • Neurology and neurosurgery — No. 30 (represented by Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s)
  • Orthopedics — No. 33 (represented by the Herbert J. Louis Center for Pediatric Orthopedics and Sports Medicine)
  • Nephrology — No. 35
  • Cancer — No. 36 (represented by Phoenix Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders)
  • Gastroenterology and gastroenterology surgery — No. 36
  • Diabetes and endocrinology — No. 37
  • Pulmonology and lung surgery — No. 40
  • Urology — No. 48

Phoenix Children’s tied for No. 2 in the Southwest region with Children’s Medical Center Dallas, behind only Houston’s Texas Children’s Hospital.

Only the top five in each region were ranked. The Southwest consists of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma.

U.S. News and World Report ranked Boston Children’s Hospital as the nation’s best pediatric hospital.

The website bases its rankings on clinical data from nearly 200 facilities as well as surveys of more than 15,000 pediatric specialists.

Phoenix Children’s, which has its main campus on Thomas Road off State Route 51, announced last month it will invest $135 million to build a three-story hospital in Glendale.
