PHOENIX — The new widened traffic interchange at Interstate 17 and Pinnacle Peak Road in north Phoenix opened to the public this week.
The project, which built a new Pinnacle Peak Road bridge and added lanes to the interstate and on-and-off ramps, has been ongoing since November 2018, according to an Arizona Department of Transportation release.
Among the improvements were new through and left turn lanes on the highway overpass to handle increased traffic along the stretch.
The road improvements were part of ADOT’s $50 million project that also rebuilt the interchange at Happy Valley Road.
The intersection at Happy Valley Road opened to the public in October, becoming Arizona’s first diverging diamond interchange.
The project also added one lane each direction on Interstate 17 between Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley roads.
Funding for the Interstate 17 projects came from the Regional Transportation Plan that Maricopa County voters approved in 2004.
