PHOENIX — A new pilot program will get more fresh food to food banks across Arizona.

The innovative Friends of the Farm program is a partnership between the Association of Arizona Food Banks and Arizona’s agriculture industry.

The “farm to food bank” program will be funded through a $250,000 investment.

“We’ve actually had a situation where there’s been some food that has been donated back due to economic issues and policy decisions that have been made in Washington D.C. and it’s actually benefited where we can help those that are hungry and need the products,” Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday.

The program will bring more fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy and protein to food banks as well as create a reliable new market for Arizona farmers.

“This new Friends of the Farm pilot program is a win-win that will support Arizona’s farmers and fill food banks with a variety of healthy choices,” Ducey said.

The booming economy the state has been able to add dollars into social services to help those in need, Ducey added.

“We’re going to be able to add an additional $500,000 this year that will go to provide more options and nutritious food around Thanksgiving and all around the year,” Ducey said.
