PHOENIX — A Phoenix-based food bank handed out almost 100 million pounds of food last year, shattering a previous record.

St. Mary’s Food Bank distributed more than 97 million pounds of food to hungry people during the fiscal year 2018-19, according to a press release.

It was a 9-million-pound, or 10%, increase over the previous year.

St. Mary’s said the largest increases came in healthy foods, like dairy, proteins, fruits and vegetables.

The food bank has distributed more than 1.1 billion pounds of food to hungry Arizonans in its 51-year history.

“The amount of food distributed by St. Mary’s this year is not only a record but more than double the amount of food we were providing just 10 years ago,” St. Mary’s President and CEO Tom Kertis said in the release.

“There is no way we could have achieved this Herculean task without the support of the people of Arizona.”
