PHOENIX — Drivers who often travel between Casa Grande and Tucson will soon have a smoother ride.

The Arizona Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that a second Interstate 10 widening project in Pinal County was scheduled to begin in the next week.

Crews will work to widen the highway from just south of Earley Road to Interstate 8 in Casa Grande.

The project will add one lane in each direction of the highway, with a concrete barrier separating the directions of travel, and will create new bridges over Jimmie Kerr Boulevard.

It will also include auxiliary lanes in both directions between I-8 and Jimmie Kerr Boulevard, which would provide a safer alternative to the existing ramps.

The project will cost $36.6 million and was scheduled to be complete by summer 2019.

The department said the widening project was not expected to increase congestion in the area, as lane restrictions were expected to take place at night and the new I-10 lanes and SR 87 interchanges were being built east of the current freeway alignment.

Another project was currently underway in Eloy, where crews begun building new lanes, adding a new traffic interchange at State Route 87 and creating a dust detection zone in December. That was scheduled to be complete by fall 2019.

We want to hear from you.
