PHOENIX — Arizona has ranked among the heavily armed states in the nation, according to a recent report from CBS News.
The Grand Canyon state ranked No. 33 in the nation for most heavily armed states. For every 1,000 residents in Arizona, the report found there are 9.4 registered guns. That means among the 6,626,624 Arizona residents, there are 62,527 registered firearms.
Arizona tied with West Virginia for the No. 33 spot. West Virginia was also found to have 9.4 registered firearms per every 1,000 residents, but the state’s mere 1,854,304 population only equated to 17,429 registered firearms.
The most heavily armed states in the nation were found to be Wyoming, District of Columbia, Arkansas, New Mexico and Virginia.
The findings came from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record and 2013 Census Data.
The types of firearms included in the report only include those regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934, which include but are not limited to, machine guns and short-barreled rifles and shotguns.
A November report from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence found Arizona is also among the top 10 states in the nation for “bad apple” gun dealers, five percent of dealers who sold nearly 90 percent of guns traced back to crimes across the nation. The report found gun dealers in the state sold 2,026 guns that were used in crimes outside of Arizona that year.
