PHOENIX — Construction is going swimmingly, builders said this week, on what will be the first indoor water park in Arizona.

The first frame panels for the slide tower have gone into place at the Scottsdale site of Great Wolf Lodge Arizona.

Plans, which were announced in January, included a hotel with more than 300 rooms. The park and resort is going up near Loop 101 and Via de Ventura.

Work on the Scottsdale park has gone well enough to keep the project on track, helped along by crews using tilt-up construction to get the slide’s wall upright and positioned.

In tilt-up construction, a building’s walls are “poured directly at the jobsite in large slabs of concrete called “tilt-up panels” or “tiltwall panels,” the website Tiltup.com explained.

The panels are then hoisted into position to form the exterior walls. It saves time and money, project manager Brad Hughes of Chandler-based Mortenson Construction said in an email.

“We are always looking for a better way to do something, so when we started talking about this method, we knew we had to do it,” he said.

The panel frame weighs in at more than 365,000 pounds and measures more than 78 feet high and nearly 63 feet wide.

Great Wolf Lodge Arizona was expected to open in August 2019.
