PHOENIX — A gunman demanding drugs in a Phoenix pharmacy was shot and killed Tuesday night by a customer, police said.

The attempted armed robbery at a Walgreens near 35th Avenue and Union Hills Drive was still under investigation Wednesday.

Witnesses told police the man, later identified as 30-year-old Stephen Holguin, had one gun, maybe two, and that he jumped the counter, pointed a gun and shouted at the pharmacist for OxyContin.

As many as a dozen customers were in the store shortly before 7 p.m.

“People were obviously scared … some were hiding,” Sgt. John Howard said.

The customer who shot Holguin was cooperating, police said.

There was a chance the man could face criminal charges, but he was released pending further investigation.

The customer asked police to not be identified.

We want to hear from you.
