PHOENIX — Vandals have spray-painted a racial slur at a Phoenix high school that only a year ago dealt with a similar message on T-shirts.

A wall at Desert Vista High was tagged with allusions to the N-word, a Tempe Union High School District spokeswoman told 12 News this week.

The graffiti on an exterior bathroom wall read: “N-I-*-*-E-R” and had been painted during last weekend, less than two weeks before graduation at the school near 32nd Street and Pecos Road in the southeast Valley.

Last year, a handful of students posed for a photo, each wearing a T-shirt bearing an alphabet letter or an asterisk that could have spelled out the N-word. The social-media post went viral.

At the time, the school said the girls would be disciplined, but the specifics would not be disclosed, keeping in line with district policy.

Phoenix Police’s bias crimes and graffiti unit was investigating the latest incident. Tips can be called in to Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
