Glendale fire reminds parents to watch kids around pools as summer nears

May 3, 2017, 4:58 AM

PHOENIX — The Glendale Fire Department is reminding parents that keeping an eye on kids around water could save a life, especially as the summer heat approaches.

The department encouraged parents to follow a three-step process nicknamed the ABCs to keep children safe.

The A is for adult supervision.

“There’s nothing better than that,” Glendale fire spokewoman Ashley Losch said. “You can’t do anything more than watch your children. That’s going to keep them safe.”

The B is for barriers.

“Door locks, pool fences, things that keep kids out of the water,” Losch said, adding that toys should be kept away from the barrier so kids are less tempted to find a way around it.

The final letter, C, stands for classes.

“Get your kids in the water, get yourself in the water,” Losch said. “Take a swim class together and start them really young so they at least know how to float should something happen.”

Adults should also take CPR classes in case of an emergency.

The department said the water safety tips apply to more than just pools. Children should also be closely monitored around canals, lakes and bathtubs.
