Lightrail and truck collide in Phoenix, knocking train off tracks

May 9, 2015, 12:31 PM | Updated: 7:20 pm

PHOENIX — A lightrail train and a truck collided at Central and Clarendon avenues south of Indian School Road on Saturday, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Sergeant Jonathan Howard said, “Injured people have been transported to local hospitals, injuries were serious, but not life threatening.”

According to Howard, there have been a total of seven people who have complained of injuries, three of those injured have been transported to local hospitals and are in stable, but non-life threatening condition. Two of which were occupants of the truck and one who was on board the light rail.

“The train dislodged from the track and power to the lightrail in the area has been interrupted,” said Howard.

Service was shut down in central Phoenix for several hours, as power needed to be restored and police investigated the scene.

Around 5 p.m., Valley Metro said the lightrail was back in service at all stations, but that the trains were off their normal schedule.

But a little more than an hour later, the lightrail had returned to its regular Saturday schedule.
