The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office will use a mobile billboard and wrapped inmate transport vans as a way to encourage county residents to report illicit drug activity.

“It’s a big problem and we have to do something about it,” said Sheriff Joe Arpaio. “If we could stop the drugs, believe me, crime would go down 60 percent.”

Arpaio made the announcement on the heels of a two-month drug crackdown — a period in which detectives made 119 arrests of mostly drug traffickers.

The sweep resulted in the seizure of 10,000 pounds of marijuana, 11 pounds of heroin, 28 pounds of methamphetamine and ecstasy with a cumulative street value of approximately $8 million.

In addition, MCSO reports the investigations resulted in locating human remains in the desert along with the confiscation of thousands of dollars in cash, weapons and vehicles.
