PHOENIX — Police in Phoenix said they arrested a 23-year-old man Tuesday morning after a gun went off in his pocket during a struggle with authorities.
Damoin Obrian Walters was booked into Maricopa County Jail on multiple counts that included assault and offenses against public order.
Officers responded to an apartment complex near 16th Street and Glendale Avenue around 6:45 a.m. to speak to a man and woman related to a call about a fight, the Phoenix Police Department said.
Police said they told Walters multiple times to take his hands out of his pockets but he refused.
When an officer got into a struggle with Walters, a gun in his pocket went off. Police said several more rounds from the weapon were fired after that.
The other officer used his electronic control device and the two officers were able to take the man into custody.
Both officers were taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
An investigation is ongoing.
