PHOENIX — One person died and several others were hospitalized after a collision involving four vehicles in Phoenix on Wednesday evening, authorities said.
Paramedics arrived on the scene around 6 p.m. and found nine people among the wreckage, with one requiring extrication and five taken to a hospital, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.
Paul Cosma, 35, died after the SUV he was riding in was hit by a vehicle that ran a red light at 43rd Avenue and Cactus Road, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release Thursday.
Police said a GMC Yukon heading east on Cactus drove through a red light and hit a Toyota Highlander, which was knocked into a Toyota Camry. Debris from the collision struck a BMW.
Cosma, who was in the passenger seat of the Highlander, died after being taken to a hospital, police said.
The woman driving the Yukon and man driving the Highlander were hospitalized in critical condition, police said.
The fire department said two girls, ages 5 and 7, were also hospitalized. Police said the girls, who were passengers in the Highlander, suffered injuries that weren’t serious.
No occupants of the Camry or BMW required hospitalization, police said.
Police said impairment for the Yukon driver and speed may be a factor in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
