PHOENIX — A Maricopa County Sheriff’s detention officer was arrested Monday on a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from a February excessive force incident.

Anthony Nguyen, 48, was arrested following the culmination of an MCSO investigation initiated on Feb. 19 over his deployment of a Taser on an inmate, according to a press release.

The investigation determined Nguyen’s actions to be excessive force by policy.

MCSO said it was in the process of terminating Nguyen’s employment.

“Although I recognize the inherent dangers and challenges that our detention officers face every day, I will neither ignore nor excuse actions in violation of the law or in conflict with our oath of office,” Sheriff Paul Penzone said in the release.

“We will continue to uphold standards to reflect the commitment and integrity of the men and women in this organization who work to ensure we protect the community’s trust.”
