Sharper Point: PCH Give-A-Thon is something we can all get behind

I recently wrote about the wonderful, mostly apolitical, world of dog rescue.

It’s not only a space where Democrats and Republicans, independents and Green Party Socialists can operate with political impunity (and political scrapes rarely occur), it’s also an area of philanthropy that cuts across our various political proclivities and attracts an equal amount of righties, lefties and centrists.

A couple of years ago (when I came back to work here at KTAR), I discovered something else that also unites people across the political spectrum: sick kids.

There’s an old showbiz saying: “You never want to follow kids or pets,” but I think we can follow pets with kids, right?

This Wednesday and Thursday, just about everybody who works here at KTAR News 92.3 FM and our sister station, 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station, will be found at the cafeteria at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Not to eat (although the food there is yummy), but to raise another $1 million-plus for PCH.

Last year, you helped us bring the total to more than $1.6 million.

That money not only funded Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s cutting-edge research and incredible family services, but also the world-class care that takes place each and every day at PCH.

During our broadcast (Wednesday from 2-7 p.m. and Thursday from 5 a.m.-7 p.m.), we will introduce you to parents who have been through hell and back, miracle-working caregivers and, of course, the amazing kids who receive that world-class care. Many who have faced more in their first few years than you and I will probably face in our entire lifetimes.

Yes, I look forward to our Phoenix Children’s Hospital Give-A-Thon because it’s a break from all the political bickering (in an especially bickery election year) — but I really LOVE it because it’s a chance to make a big difference in a lot of little lives.

One of the reasons I love working at KTAR is that management is as committed to us producing big money numbers for Phoenix Children’s Hospital as they are to us producing big ratings numbers.

Hey, no pressure — but my boss will be really, really happy if we do better this year than we even did last year.

It’s a win-win: You not only might save a child’s life by contributing to our PCH Give-A-Thon, you might just save my job.

Just sayin’.

Are voters really apathetic about 2024 election — or are they still trying to digest the last one?

Apparent voter apathy might actually be a sign of burnout from previous elections, writes KTAR host Jim Sharpe.
