PHOENIX — Campers will face more than a steep hike when they go to pay for Havasupai permits this year: Tribal officials who manage the site have drastically increased permit prices.

In a post, the Havasupai tribe said it made the decision to raise prices because the popular hiking and swimming spot in the Grand Canyon has gone viral and the demand for permits has greatly increased.

“We have many more reservation requests than available campground spaces,” the post said. “The impact of visitors in the canyon and the cost of maintaining trails and visitor services has been overwhelming.

“As a result, in 2018 there will be significant price increases and new limits on number of nights available for reservations.”

The tribe said it was going away from its list of expenses and will instead charge a flat rate that includes all fees and taxes for permits.

A pass for one person to stay near the falls for two days and one night will cost $140.56. The cost for two nights is $171.11 and three nights is $201.67.

People will not be allowed to stay longer than three nights on a single booking, but multiple reservations can be made to extend stays.

Permits for weekends, holidays and spring break will have an additional $18.33 tacked on per night.

All permits are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another person.

Permits for this year were expected to go on sale Feb. 1.

Last year, Havasupai was named the best campground in the state and, in 2016, Havasupai Falls was among the nation’s top-rated waterfalls.
