Tempe police to begin patrolling schools

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Tempe Police Department will be increasing patrols around elementary schools, middle schools and high schools in Tempe through spring break on March 8.

“It’s a good reminder for people driving in school zones to slow down, for parents to buckle up your kids, make sure you’re putting them in car seats and talk to your kids about safety,” said Tempe Police Sgt. Steve Carbajal.

Motorcycle officers will be focusing on vehicle traffic, pedestrian safety, car seat usage and speeding violations around schools. The city said the presence of police also deters criminal activity.

“The goal of the campaign is to get parents, students and others in the areas of our schools to remember that it is everyone’s responsibility to stop and think,” said Carbajal. “Neighbors are our constant partners in fighting crime and helping keep kids safe.”
