Valley swim school offers free lessons for kids

Aug 28, 2012, 7:45 AM | Updated: 7:45 am

In response to the growing number of water-related incidents, Aqua Tots Swim Schools across the Valley are offering free swim classes through Aug. 31.

Brent Byerly, who owns the Aqua Tots location near 19th Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road, said about 40 people have taken advantage of the offer.

Byerly said the children learn important water skills and techniques that could mean the difference between life and death.

“We’ll work on rollovers to a back float, in case they find themselves in the water, they’re able to rollover and maintain afloat and yell for help until someone can rescue them,” he said. “We’ll also teach them how to safely jump into the water and then turn around by themselves, get back to the edge and climb out.”

On Saturday, a 4-year-old was found at the bottom of a motel pool near Buckeye Road and Seventh Street. He died at the hospital.
