PHOENIX — A west Phoenix golf course is closing temporarily, starting next week, so that construction crews can give it a new look.

The 53-year-old Maryvale Golf Course at 59th avenue and Indian School Road will undergo a $9 million renovation because of a public-private partnership between the city of Phoenix and Grand Canyon University.

“We’re going to rebuild everything,” said Grand Canyon University President Brian Mueller. “The tee boxes, the fairways, the greens, the bunkers. It’s going to be the best grass that you can put in a place like this. We have a world class architect and a world class construction crew.”

Mueller said the current clubhouse will be demolished and replaced with one that will include a restaurant and can accommodate wedding receptions and other events in addition to golf.

The course will still be owned by the city of Phoenix, with inexpensive admission fees like those offered at other city owned courses. It will be managed by the university, with several hundred students staffing the course as part of the school’s hospitality program.

The course will also be the home of the university’s Division 1 golf team.

“This will be a real asset in terms of building a nationally-accredited golf program,” Mueller said.

The course will be expanded from from its current length of 6,700 yards to 7,200 yards. It is expected to re-open by mid-October.
