PHOENIX — Severe winter weather in the Midwest is affecting flights across the nation, including those leaving Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
Travelers were playing a game of hurry up and wait as they rushed to the airport Monday only to find out their flights were delayed or canceled. Some fliers stared at the flight information board Monday, which was littered with delays and cancellations, and expressed their frustrations.
“I have to get back to work right after I land so hopefully my flight is on time so I can get to work on time,” one traveler said.
One Phoenix resident said he and his wife were delayed heading to Hawaii and were very anxious to get to the warm tropical weather. However, they had to wait a bit longer than expected.
“We already have a delay — actually it’s about 50 minutes or so — but fortunately we are not heading to where it snows, so hopefully we’ll be alright,” they said
The Federal Aviation Administration said travelers heading from Phoenix to Chicago O’Hare — a major hub for the Midwest — would face 30 minute delays on average.
Several flights to New Mexico, Dallas, and various airports in the Midwest were also cancelled.
Nationwide, the weather system caused more than 1,400 flights to be canceled — nearly half of which were at Chicago’s two main airports — and 2,600 to be delayed, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. A typical day sees about 150 cancellations and 4,000 delays.
