New app geared to steer Arizona motorists out of trouble

PHOENIX — Ever wonder how long your commute to work is going to be each day?
The Arizona Department of Transportation has a new tool that could help take the guess-work out of figuring out the best route to take.
ADOT has announced it has launched a free app, called ADOT Alerts, designed to send drivers notifications of crashes and other road hazards so motorists can steer clear of trouble on Valley roadways.
The goal is to eliminate lengthy travel delays and to alert motorists of public safety issues such as wrong-way drivers.
“We’re excited about ADOT Alerts because the app will help us quickly get critical information directly to motorists,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said in a press release.
“With that information, travelers can make a decision to take a different route or stop somewhere for a bite to eat or stay where they are at, and avoid sitting in a long backup because of an unplanned event, like a serious crash that closes a highway. We can also alert motorists to public safety issues, like wrong-way vehicles or severe weather affecting state highways,” he said.
The app uses geo-fencing technology, meaning drivers who would most likely be affected by the notification will receive it.
ADOT officials stress it’s important to enable location services and push notifications so users can be immediately informed of traffic alerts. The app can be downloaded in Google Play and Apple App Store.
