PHOENIX — Gov. Doug Ducey on Monday issued an executive order that will halt evictions for Arizona small businesses and nonprofits that are struggling during the coronavirus outbreak.

The order stops evictions through the end of May and encourages commercial tenants to defer rent payments and cancel fees and interest accrued because of late payments.

“Arizona is grateful to the many landlords who are already working as good partners with small businesses during these challenging times,” Ducey said in a press release. “This order helps ensure no small business or nonprofit will face eviction due to COVID-19 and that landlords and small businesses work in partnership to make sure we get through this emergency together.”

The order comes a week after Ducey announced an agreement with Arizona banks to protect small businesses and families from eviction and foreclosure.

As part of the $349 billion Paycheck Protection Program, banks also committed to expediting the application and approval of small business loans.

Arizona remains under a “stay-at-home” order as the coronavirus continues to spread across the state.

The state reported 2,456 cases and 65 deaths in its Monday morning update.
