PHOENIX – The teenage victim of a shooting at a west Phoenix mall earlier this week has died, and police have arrested a suspect in the case.

The Phoenix Police Department said Thursday that Daymond Deray Hayes, 27, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon in connection to what is now a homicide at Desert Sky Mall.

The victim was a 15-year-old-boy. He’d been taken to a hospital in critical condition after the shooting, which occurred following a verbal argument between two groups of people, police said.

The suspects fled the scene. The mall is located at Thomas Road and 75th Avenue.

Police didn’t say how they determined Hayes was a suspect.

Hayes was described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall and 185 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a goatee. He has a small tattoo on the side of his right eye.

A reward of up to $1,000 was being offered for information leading to Hayes’ arrest.
