PHOENIX – A man died in Phoenix hospital Thursday after apparently shooting himself by accident with a handgun, authorities said.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about man with an abdominal gunshot wound east of Prescott around 3 p.m.

The 58-year-old man, who has not been identified pending next of kin notification, told the person who made the call and a deputy on the scene he shot himself accidentally, according to a YCSO press release.

He was found in an area off Orme Road about a mile from Highway 169 in Dewey.

Paramedics stabilized the man before he was flown by helicopter to a Phoenix hospital, where he died during surgery.

Deputies found a handgun in the man’s truck about 40 feet from where he was found lying on the ground.

The investigation is ongoing, but there is no indication anybody else was around when the shooting occurred, according to YCSO.

No other information was immediately available.
