Arizona sheriff’s office given $55,000 to improve border safety

PHOENIX — Arizona’s Joint Border Security Advisory Commission decided that $55,000 raised online to help improve safety at the Mexico border will be given to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.
“The majority of it is cameras,” spokeswoman Carol Capas said. “That is what we intend to use the $55,000 for.”
The sheriff’s office received money from the same fund in 2015. Sheriff Mark Dannels used that money for purchases such as GPS devices and thermal imaging cameras.
Th new cameras will be to act as a force multiplier to the security devices purchased and placed two years ago.
“We strategically place them through known smuggling routes and different areas where we have information of illegal activity occuring,” Capas said.
